TB Patient Support During the COVID-19 Pandemic

It is our hope everyone is keeping safe and healthy at home. This week, we have been reflecting on the importance of continued patient adherence. Most of our patients in Kenya rely on our intervention to continue with their treatment during these difficult times, and we simply cannot afford to leave them on their own.

Good health relies on good treatment adherence—and over 17,000 TB patients in Kenya rely on Keheala’s Support & Care intervention. Our mission has never been clearer: we must help TB patients to continue receiving the best care, adhere to treatment and protect their communities from this infectious and deadly disease. Our team is working around the clock to ensure our operations are in ways that incorporate Ministry of Health guidelines on working remotely, hand washing, and social distancing. Here are a few updates from our operations in Kenya on how we are adapting to COVID-19;

 Over 17,000 TB Patients Benefit

Since the first COVID-19 case was reported in Kenya, we have continued to provide patients with relevant information, motivation, treatment reminders and support. Ever since we have continued to put our patients first by promptly addressing their concerns and encouraging them to adhere to Ministry of Health directives as we continue to fight this pandemic.

 Safety is our priority:

Our team has been doing our part to ‘flatten the curve’ by integrating Kenya’s Ministry of Health and World Health Organization recommendations on COVID-19 preventive measures into our work:

  • Remote Working: Our team, which works from our Nairobi headquarter, quickly set up a way to work from home. In the team’s first week of working remotely, they answered thousands of calls while maintaining patient-centered care, increasing patient self-reliance and enabling greater healthcare system resiliency.

  • Disease Information: During our daily interaction with our patients, we continue to sensitize them on how to eliminate the spread of COVID-19 by practicing high standards of hygiene, maintaining social distance, staying at home and putting on a mask whenever they go outside their homes. Also, we have been able to provide accurate and factual information to our patients, countering myths and misconceptions associated with COVID-19.

We will continue to provide behavioral support to TB patients in Kenya during these unprecedented times and ensure patients are well informed and closely monitored at all times.
